Project Overview

As the making of my project comes to an end im using this blog post to reflect on my experiences, and share how this investigation has prepared me for a role in professional journalism.

First off, exploring the unstable finances of National League clubs proved to be a fascinating choice of topic for my project. I was able to meet with fans and club staff to see for myself the impact that these problems are having on the local community. Salisbury fan Ray Neal said that seeing his club fold in 2014 was like "losing one of the family", which is a sentiment shared by many fans in his position.

Seeing the impact of these tough financial situations it made me question why this happened. I saw that although the authorities can be blamed for not properly safeguarding these clubs against potentially rogue owners, the clubs themselves are often to blame in their reckless spending.

Although it has been the toughest, it has certainly been the most rewarding project I have worked during my time at university. It has simulated the experiences of many journalists and documentary makers, and has helped me to decide what kind of journalism career I want to go into.
