The demise of Bury Football Club was well documented by the media, why don't struggling non-league clubs get the same attention?
In early August football fans across the country were eagerly anticipating the start of the season, hoping a win in the opening weekend would kickstart a successful campaign. But for supporters of Bury Football Club, what happened on the pitch was far from the forefront of their minds.
The Lancashire club was given a winding up order after chairman Steve Dale - who has bankrupted 43 out of 51 companies he has owned - announced he was unable to pay the debts owed to IRS. As a result the club liquidated later that month, ending its 134 year history.
The story of Bury's demise was all over the national newspapers and news channels, and rogue chairman Steve Dale became a household name among many sports fans. But what shocked me the most was the lack of attention non-league teams get when they go through similar situations, and how this is a regular occurence for these clubs.
Whilst Bury dominated the headlines, Gateshead and Ebbsfleet United - who are just two divisions below them - were resisting winding-up orders of their own. The fact this attracted minimal attention from the football world is partly a reason why i was inspired to do this project.
I will be speaking to fans and staff at Ebbsfleet United to get their thoughts on the tough times being endured by the club, and what they're doing to improve the situation.
